Congratulations on making it to the end of your first month of pregnancy! Many women become aware of their pregnancy this week through either a missed period or early pregnancy test, so it may be a surprise to hear that you are already a month along. This week, there are a lot more changes that appear for you and your baby. As your breasts prepare for breastmilk production, they will grow in size, feel full, and become increasingly sensitive to stimulation. These changes may feel tingly or, for others, achy. As your hormones fluctuate in response to the pregnancy, you may begin to experience cravings, aversions, and sensitivities to smells. As the weeks progress, it may become more challenging to eat a balanced and healthy diet, but do your best! Pregnancy is a journey, and some days, weeks, and months are more challenging than others. Have grace for yourself on the difficult days, and keep looking ahead to the different milestone moments you set for yourself!

Your baby is four weeks old! This week is a beautiful time in the development of your baby as her heart starts beating! Over the coming weeks, the heart will continue to grow in size and strength, and as you get closer to 10 weeks, you will be able to hear it for the first time at your healthcare appointment. The placenta (the organ your body creates specifically for pregnancy) also forms and brings your baby essential nutrients. Your baby has her own unique blood that is different from yours, and the placenta acts as a barrier, keeping these two separate. What a beautiful thing to think of all this happening within the first month of life.
